Clinical Analysis of Treatment for Recurrent Gastric Cancer

Abstract
While the incidence of gastric cancer is decreased in the United State and Europe, it still remains a major problem in Korea including Japan. In addition to increase of operation for gastric cancer, cases of recurrent gastric cancer have been increased. Despite the many advances in the field of surgery, management of recurrent gastric cancer continues to be one of the most difficult problems confronting the surgeon.
This study was based on clinical studies of 86 cases of recurrent gastric cancer which were admitted at the Chunnam National Hospital during about 6 year and 8 months period from Jan, 1977 to Aug, 1983.
The following results were obtained.
1) Among the 86 patients with recurrent gastric cancer, reoperations were done in 16 cases (18.6%) (Among these 16 cases, resections in 5 cases, nonresections in 11 cases), only chemotherapy in 43 cases, no treatment in 27 cases.
2) The interval between first operation and recurrence was almost less than 2 year.
3) Mean survival duration of recurrent gastric cancer was 9.2 months in resection group, 3.6 months in nonresection group, 3.4 months in chemotherapy group and 3.5 months in no treatment group.
